Chapter Eight

Chloe

When I got back to my room, my toes were still numb, but inside my chest there was an energy that didn’t fade. I sang occasional phrases of a song while I peeled out of my winter clothes: the jacket I got from the ski rental, a sweater, jeans, and a pair of tights I’d brought for my work clothes for the conference.

My spirits hadn’t been this high in... I wasn’t sure how long. I just never got attention the way Jas gave me hers. People overlooked me, like I had some kind of invisibility shield and their eyes skidded past me to fix onto anything else in the area.

Not Jas, though. She’d listened to everything I said like it really mattered. And, in turn, I wanted to hear everything she had to say.

Honestly, right then I really wanted to call somebody and dish about this. Who did I have, though? Any of my friends would think I was ridiculous for harboring a crush like this on somebody I’d just met. They’d say “There’s no way that could work out,” or “Aren’t you being a little naive?”

Maybe I was.

My hair was staticky from the woolen hat and when I looked in the mirror, it fluffed up like I was some kind of dried-out dandelion. This was a one-time thing, Jas and I. Just because I’d never made out with someone I’d just met didn’t mean I could consider it a sign that we were meant to be together.

Jas talked about a premonition, but premonitions don’t guarantee anything. By the same token, she invited me to dinner with her family, but that didn’t necessarily imply something more; she just wanted to make sure a lonely woman had a nice Christmas.

The point of this whole thing was to have a little fun while I was somewhere I didn’t have to meet anybody else’s standards. All I wanted was to nurse a crush, but then, that kiss...

I closed my eyes and exhaled a long breath. It had been, honestly, the best kiss of my life. Maybe that said something about how pathetic my love life had been. My heart, though, told me that wasn’t true. It really had been a mind-blowing kiss.

I went into the bathroom and pulled a towel down from the shelf above the toilet. A hot shower was just what I needed after being out in the snow for hours. I made sure the bathroom was steamy before I stepped naked into the tub.

If Jas kissed me, it wasn’t just me indulging in a hopeless crush. She must be into me. While, on one hand, that made me feel so happy I could fly, it also meant that there was way more at stake. We agreed to keep it in the moment, and that obviously meant we’d say goodbye at the end of the holiday.

I couldn’t allow my feelings to run too deep. I was really bad at that, though.

The hot water made my skin tingle. The coldest part of me all day had been my thighs, since I had more layers over everything else.
